Book Description
This second book in the “Ella’s America” series of historical fiction takes place in 1884 in a small NY town by Lake Ontario. When the Woodhams clean out their old cabin to move into their new house, Ella finds the stone she had picked up by the Erie Canal. She rubs it and wishes she had help with all the work they must do. Immediately, help arrives, and Ella is sure the stone is magical. She uses it when she faces trouble such as a wild animal. It also helps her when she is sad, feels ashamed, or is worried. Unfortunately, the stone doesn’t work when Ella rubs it to help her schoolteacher. Crushed by the discovery, she tosses it out the window. Later, she wishes she still had it when she and her brother Martin get caught in a terrible storm on their way to school. But on their way home, Martin points her to something better than her stone.
