Fall in upstate New York

You know it is fall in North Carolina when…
          * the farmers are harvesting crops of tobacco and cotton and sweet potatoes.
          * the searing heat of summer has disappeared
          * the nandinas are loaded with red berries
          * the fall camellias are blooming
          * children collect acorns, pinecones, and colored leaves

I love fall in North Carolina, but fall in upstate New York can be spectacular!  Frost gives the leaves a vibrant color in the North.  The effect can be doubled if you take a boat ride along the Erie Canal and see the leaves reflected in the smooth water.  I suspect that the dark evergreen trees in the North tend to make the fall colors seem even brighter.
You can find a fabulous view of fall leaves if you hike the gorge at Letchworth State Park.  While you are there, you can have dinner at the historic Glen Iris Inn overlooking the Middle Falls.

You could also take a chair lift ride up Bristol Mountain to get panoramic views.
If you take a drive through the towns along the Finger Lakes, you will see stands where people are selling grape pies.  The town of Naples even has a Grape Festival in the fall.
The area around Lake Ontario has an abundance of apple orchards, so many varieties are apples are available at the roadside stands.  The near-by cider mills offer fresh pressed cider and fried cakes, as well as a big selection of apples.
Children in the area enjoy pumpkin patches and corn mazes, while adults love stopping at roadside stands to get fresh fruits and vegetables.  Of course, Phelps has the annual Sauerkraut Festival each year, which is fun for the whole family.
We can’t forget the outdoor sportsman.  Many fishermen visit the Oswego area because the salmon migrate upstream during the fall.  For a week or so each fall, fishermen will gather for the salmon run, which promises great fishing.
