Immigrants in America

Today more people than ever are immigrating to America in hopes of finding a better life.  The children of these immigrant families may face many of the same unknowns that Ella encountered when she and her family came to America.  Like Ella, they face a new school with a teacher and students they do not know.  They have to adjust to a new home, a different climate, and a new culture with strange customs and different ways of doing things.
If the children speak a foreign language, they will have to learn English in addition to their native language.  They may face frustration as they learn new words or different accents because friends may not understand their speech in the beginning.  Sometimes newcomers find that they are not accepted because they wear different styles of clothes, or  they act in ways that are unfamiliar to others.  They may have to work extra hard to overcome the resentment of others who have been in the country longer than they have been.  Like people in Ella’s time, they will eventually gain the respect of others as they continue to work at building this country into a better place.  They may find that the chance to make a better life for themselves and others is worth all the obstacles that they have to  encounter.
